Mianyang, China, 2009 | The city of Mianyang was destroyed by a large earthquake in 2008. Since most of the governmental buildings collapsed the city government announced an international competition rebuilding the administration and county government at a hill side in the north-west of the city. The design is integrating the large mass of administrative building inside the landscape and placing the new town hall on the top of the hill. At the bottom a sunken library is opening an axis through the built landscape. We won the first prize in the international competition – unfortunately the client decided to built a more “traditional” Chinese architecture since the region received a lot of money from other counties in China.
